Hello! Tell us who you are and what’s your backstory.‍

I’m originally from Montreal, Canada (go Habs!), spent my teenage years in Albuquerque, and then moved to Pittsburgh to attend Carnegie Mellon University. After my Junior year of college, I worked with my cousin at his first startup in San Francisco, developing a Web coding framework. Honestly, I’ve never looked back, and while I had some large company experiences as well (VP Product for CBS, then for WarnerMedia), I’ve always found startup life my most natural fit.

‍Can you give us your 1-3 sentence elevator pitch?

We empower everyone, from individuals to enterprises, to effortlessly create professional-quality videos. We designed Augie to be as easy as writing an email. Our AI-powered platform offers intuitive editing, automatic media matching, and a suite of features that streamline the video creation process, making engaging content accessible to all. By simplifying complex editing tasks, Augie lets you tell your story with impact without the steep learning curve.

What was the moment or situation that sparked the idea for your business?

‍During the pandemic, I started a podcast (with my Aug X Labs co-founder, JT White). We were growing steadily, but I had read a few tips about making a “video trailer” for your podcast (help spread the word via YouTube, TikTok, etc). So, I decided to try my hand at learning some basic video editing skills. I had access to all the best tools and even had a narration in hand for my video. After a few weeks of trying self-paced tutorials, I gave up in frustration. And I started wondering, “Why is it so hard to learn how to make good-looking videos?”

I turned to a colleague (my other cofounder, Scott Havird), and asked, “Could we make a thing that could just listen to the words and automatically match to images and clips with the right metadata?”

As they say, the rest is history.

‍How did you test and refine your initial product idea, and were there any significant pivots or changes in direction based on initial feedback or market response?

When developing Augie, we placed great emphasis on user feedback and market signals to refine our initial product idea. Starting as a simple video editing tool, we pivoted towards creating a comprehensive AI-powered video creation platform in response to our users' need for a more streamlined, end-to-end solution. The introduction of AI transcription and 'Magic Search' directly resulted from user feedback highlighting content creation and media sourcing challenges. Incorporating users' own media libraries into Augie was another strategic shift, enriching personalization and versatility.

Market responses further shaped our strategy, leading us to broaden our focus beyond individual users to embrace the small business and enterprise sectors. This expansion came with an enriched feature set, including collaboration tools and advanced performance analytics to serve the more complex needs of these users. Through a lean startup methodology, we've continuously adapted, ensuring Augie remains agile and responsive to the evolving landscape of video content creation, positioning us as a customer-focused leader in the market.

What specific strategies or decisions significantly contributed to the growth and scaling of your business?

Augie's growth and scaling have been significantly driven by strategic decisions focusing on user acquisition and retention through a freemium model coupled with a product-led growth (PLG) approach. This model attracted a wide user base by offering core functionalities for free, while premium features were included only as part of subscription tiers. The user-friendly design of Augie, which allows for quick adoption and sharing, also played a pivotal role. By enabling users to experience the value of Augie firsthand, we created organic growth through word-of-mouth and user referrals, which were further amplified by targeted marketing campaigns and social proof strategies.

Another cornerstone of our scaling strategy was forming strategic partnerships with established platforms like Dropbox and TikTok, integrating Augie into their ecosystems and providing immediate value to their vast user bases. These partnerships not only expanded our reach but also reinforced our brand's credibility. Additionally, the introduction of VideoMyListing.com utilized Augie's technology to address the specific needs of two-sided marketplaces, thereby tapping into a new customer segment and creating a funnel for Augie's main offerings. These strategic moves, supported by a strong focus on a seamless user experience and continuous product innovation, have allowed Augie to scale rapidly and establish a significant presence in the competitive landscape of video editing solutions.

Can you share some major challenges and how you tackled them?

In the journey of scaling Augie, we encountered the significant challenge of maintaining a balance between feature richness and user simplicity. As our platform evolved to include more advanced capabilities, there was a risk of alienating our core user base of non-professional editors who valued Augie's ease of use. To tackle this, we invested heavily in user experience design, ensuring that new features were integrated seamlessly and intuitively. Continuous user education through tutorials and responsive customer support helped users navigate the platform's growing complexity without feeling overwhelmed.

Another hurdle was the need to stay ahead of rapidly changing video technology trends and user expectations - not to mention the unbelievable pace of innovation in the Generative AI field. To navigate this, Augie adopted an agile development approach, prioritizing flexibility

in our product roadmap to quickly incorporate emerging technologies and user feedback. This adaptability was crucial when we introduced mobile optimization and social media integration features in response to the market's shift towards mobile and social-first content. By remaining customer-focused and agile, Augie successfully transformed challenges into opportunities for innovation and growth.

How did you really get to know your customers and market?

At Augie, we've refined our product through a mix of direct user engagement and market analysis. Our journey involved surveys, interviews, and tests with a wide range of users, from individual creators to large marketing teams. Using this approach helped us pinpoint challenges in video creation, leading to features like AI transcription and user-friendly editing.

We also stay current on key market trends, industry/sentiment shifts (highly relevant in the burgeoning AI field), and other relevant products. Insights into the critical impact of video on engagement and sales have shaped our product roadmap and strategy. This blend of user focus and market insight keeps Augie innovative and responsive, ensuring we stay ahead in the video editing space.

What's the story behind your brand and marketing approach?

The story behind Augie's brand and marketing approach is built on the premise of democratizing video creation and visual storytelling, making it accessible, fun, and an integral part of communication for businesses and individuals alike. We've crafted our brand identity around being smart, innovative, and trustworthy while also being approachable and joyful. This is reflected in our user experience, which is designed to be as intuitive and pleasant as possible.

Our marketing strategies are uniquely tailored to showcase Augie's ease of use and powerful capabilities. We've leveraged video marketing's proven effectiveness to drive engagement, employing data-backed approaches such as including the word "video" in email campaigns for increased open rates and using our own platform to create compelling ads and content that exhibit the product's strengths.

Additionally, as mentioned earlier, our partnership strategy empowers us to integrate Augie into the existing workflows of a diverse user base. This provides value to our partners' customers and introduces Augie to wider audiences in an organic and seamless manner.

With VideoMyListing, we've targeted niche markets, starting with Airbnb hosts, using the Augie platform to create tailored videos that enhance marketplace listings, thereby micro-targeting potential Augie users and engaging them through strategic email drip campaigns. This dual-product strategy serves immediate video creation needs and funnels users toward Augie's broader capabilities.

How did you attract and secure your first customers?

‍Like so many others, we started getting our close network of colleagues and friends to use the product. Amongst the feedback, some of the videos went live on YouTube, LinkedIn, and other social media platforms. Due to the “Made by Augie!” bumper at the end of the video, it started sending us traffic.

When we moved to private beta, we announced it via LinkedIn, which drove a steady stream of traffic throughout the process. When we launched our public beta, we used ProductHunt, where we were among the top ten for the day, and we’ve been growing steadily since then.

‍What's been your approach to product development?

Our approach to product development at Augie has been deeply rooted in customer-centricity and iterative design. From the outset, we've embraced a philosophy of continuous improvement, where user feedback is the cornerstone of our development process. We regularly engage with our user base through surveys, beta testing, and community forums, ensuring their insights and experiences directly influence our product roadmap. This feedback loop has been instrumental in refining existing features and identifying new functionalities that align with our users' evolving needs. For instance, the addition of the 'Magic Search' feature and the enhancement of our AI transcription capabilities were direct outcomes of user suggestions.

We've adopted a methodology in our development process allowing us to rapidly prototype, test, and iterate on new features. This approach ensures that we can quickly respond to market trends and user demands, maintaining Augie's relevance and competitiveness. We place a strong emphasis on user experience and usability, ensuring that even as we introduce advanced features, the platform remains accessible and intuitive for all user levels. By integrating customer feedback into every stage of the product development cycle, Augie has continued to evolve as a must-have visual storytelling offering and as a solution finely tuned to our diverse user base's specific needs and preferences.

How have you navigated the financial aspects of your business?

Funding Aug X Labs has been a very exciting adventure of its own. When I first started the company, I was able to raise an initial tranche from friends and family. As our initial prototype was readied, I extended the round further with some angel investors and small funds, who helped us not only financially but strategically as well.

In 2023, we began initial fundraising for our Series Seed, which was going along quite well until the Silicon Valley Bank collapse effectively shut down the venture capital market through Q2. We restarted the raise in Q3, and raised an oversubscribed round with a phenomenal suite of investors, led by Unlock Venture Partners, joined by visionary investors including Dropbox Ventures, Hyde Park Venture Partners, Flying Fish Ventures, and Untappd.VC and others.

Regardless of funding status, the core principle I adhere to when considering finances is the old saying “spend it like it's your own money” - we do. While we can obviously afford more than when we were bootstrapped or pre-seed, we stay disciplined so the money will last long and keep us making the best decisions we can.

What future do you envision for your company?

Looking towards the future, we envision Augie becoming a cornerstone in the video storytelling world, from the very first steps in creating a story to the editing market, by becoming known for its innovation, user-friendliness, and powerful capabilities.

Our vision is anyone who wants to tell their story visually - can. This means we need to serve users whenever and wherever they may be. So, on our horizon is everything from a mobile-first experience to international language and translation support.

But it also means more than that. It means building pre-set templates to make it even easier for a first-time video creator. It means building style-aware features that allow our users to ensure all their content matches their brand. It means staying on top of all the key storytelling trends on social video platforms and making them easily accessible within Augie.

Today, most professionals are comfortable with the core digital office suite: documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.

Fundamentally, we envision a world where video is considered as accessible a platform as the rest of the office suite.
